My poems, in Chinese, can be read in two directions (at least!). Translation to English demands a doubling and an inverting. I call them palindromes (\u56de\u6587).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To create a palindrome is to be both the predator and prey: the predator cunningly frames, as bait, a twisted apologia; for the prey, reading is the multi-directional task of\u00a0making sense<\/em>, as well as a frenzied search for an exit. At least, I\u00a0felt<\/em>\u00a0it was so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let\u2019s sketch a history of the form, starting with\u00a0Palindromes Categorized<\/em>\u00a0(\u300a\u00a0\u56de\u00a0\u6587\u00a0\u985e\u00a0\u805a\u00a0\u300b), a very old book, the editing of which spans many centuries. It began with the scholar Sang Shichang (\u6851\u00a0\u4e16\u00a0\u660c), late in the Song dynasty (960-1279). It paused when Mongolians took over (1271-1368), and resumed through the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), when Confucian values and Han traditions made their overpowering return. The version I am reading now is based on the editing work of Zhu Xiangxian (\u6731\u00a0\u8c61\u00a0\u8ce2), a scholar from Kangxi era (1661-1722). In the late eighteenth century,\u00a0Palindromes Categorized<\/em>\u00a0was included among the tens of thousands of books and scrolls that made up emperor Qian Long\u2019s massive Si Ku Quan Shu (\u300a\u56db\u00a0\u5eab\u00a0\u5168\u00a0\u66f8\u300b) \u2014 not conspicuously or prominently, but enough for renowned literates to pay homage to this shrine of palindromes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diva of\u00a0Palindromes Categorized<\/em>\u00a0is Su Hui (\u8607\u00a0\u8559), who, in the fourth century, created the Star Gauge (\u7487\u00a0\u74a3\u00a0\u5716), an undecipherable (or multi-decipherable) palindrome complex, woven into brocade. Her poetic endeavor began as the tortured indulgence of family drama. (Whose doesn\u2019t?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
