An Odessa conga line

Published in

In ERB Issue One, we published several photographs from Yamandu Roos’s Europeans (2015). The book is a record of a found continent, with glimpses of forty countries. One photograph was titled, « I am in the Team — Effectivity, Responsibility, Order », and showed a business-casual conga-line leaving a pale blue building in Odessa in 2010. It spoke powerfully to the moment. But there was another photo that Europeans did not include, with most of them conga-lining back in. Back to work? Back to play? Hard to say.

  • Only stupidity is hereditary

There sits a donkey before an open book, held between his forehooves in such a way that we can clearly see the pages. It is a family tree of sorts, with eight rows of seventeen standing donkeys.

  • Curtain call

An iron curtain makes a powerful canvas. Images from Sven Johne & Falk Haberkorn’s Aus Sicht des Archivs, documenting life in the former East Germany in the 1990s.
